PASSHE Geology Field Course Application Summer 2025
The PASSHE Geology Field Experience is an opportunity for students to apply existing knowledge and skills and gain new competencies through the investigation of Pennsylvania’s unique and varied geology. Students will work independently and in groups during a 3-week immersive, FOUR credit field-based course, to collect, analyze, and interpret data and to develop scientific reports and presentations. Fundamental skills in Geology, such as lithologic and stratigraphic descriptions, surficial and bedrock mapping, water quality monitoring, and geophysical and environmental analyses and hazard assessments, will be developed. The course is offered throughout Pennsylvania at select locations with modules taught by experts from across the state system.
Students will study and be housed at Shippensburg, and Indiana Universities of Pennsylvania during the traveling term. The course will run May 20-June 10, 2025. Students should plan to arrive at Shippensburg the evening of May 19th and depart Indiana University of Pennsylvania no sooner than the afternoon of June 10th. Accepted participants will move from Shippensburg, PA to Indiana, PA on or about May 31, 2025. Students wishing to drive their own vehicles may do so ONLY to travel to/from and between the host universities. Students will not be able to drive their own vehicles to/from field sites. Course-required travel, food, and housing will once again be provided through NSF grant funding until funds are exhausted. Students are responsible for tuition, fees, and other expenses (i.e. field gear, getting to/from the starting university, health care costs, etc.).
PLEASE NOTE
Participation in this course requires the ability to walk over uneven terrain, active participation in all aspects of field work, and requires students to participate in field work in all types of weather (heat, cold, rain, etc.). Students must be prepared for all field activities and remain professional and dress appropriately during all required field course activities. Failure to maintain professional decorum is grounds for dismissal from the course.
If students require specialized accommodations, please note this information in your application so we can best assist you.
